Gustaw Szydlik

Gustaw Szydlik is a multidisciplinary sound artist and technician with a focus on spatial audio, immersive environments, and experimental composition. Currently completing a BA (Hons) in Music and Sound Design at Ravensbourne University London, they will be continuing their academic journey this year with an MSt in Musicology at the University of Oxford.

Szydlik's creative practice spans gallery-based sound art, Dolby Atmos mixes, and film-based projects, as well as live audio engineering for events and performances. Outside of academic and professional work, they also produce music as a personal and creative hobby — an ongoing process that continues to inform and inspire their broader practice.

Whether working independently or collaboratively, Szydlik brings precision, innovation, and a strong sensitivity to the listener’s experience.

SphereMedium: 8-speaker spatialised installation, Ableton 12, granular synthesis, distortion, sine wave based sounds Size: Three meters in diameter, Duration: 5:04 minutes, Digital Audio (48 kHz, 24-bit, 8-channel WAV mix played from Ableton 12) Date: 2024 A sound art installation project inspired by the fugue, a classical polyphonic composition. Instead of exploring the fugue's structure through usual means, I tried to do so using distortion, granular effects, and spatialisation. The core of the composition was 5 sine wave based sounds with very simple melodic lines playing only the note C or E throughout the piece. Spatialised using an approximately 360 degrees 8 speaker setup (3m diameter).
KrzyzeMedium: Video (Binaural Mix, 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos Mix, 2.0 Stereo Mix) Size: 5.20 (Video duration, 1920x100 pixels) Date: 2024 The visuals for this work were made by Oliwia Celik. Krzyze (Polish for 'crosses) is a video featuring a monologue generated by ChatGPT-4, paired with symbolic visuals. The piece explores the subjective interpretation of symbols, reflecting on how meaning is shaped by humans and Al. I composed all of the sound for the piece, making it spatial using Dolby Atmos in Pro Tools.
RandomiserMedium: Synthesizer programmed in Max Size: 7:21 (Video duration) Date: 2023 This synthesizer was programmed in Max with a primary focus on enabling the randomisation of nearly all parameters. The design incorporates two oscillators, each with independent envelope generators, two filters and a master panner. Additionally, it features an autonomous playback mode. A key function is the RANDOM ALL control, which randomises all parameters simultaneously, while the CHAOS function allows for continuous, dynamic randomisation.
